Job Responsibilities
Under broad supervision, performs all facets of general ledger accounting for the organization. Analyzes financial information, reconciles accounts, identifies financial trends, makes recommendations to supervisors and prepares financial reports, including specialized or non-standard reports. Performs tasks needed to maintain the accuracy of all financial data for the organization for purposes of adhering to accepted accounting procedures, as well as external governmental and regulatory requirements.
Primary Functions: Performs accounting function for the general ledger section within the finance group.
- Reviews detailed general ledger transactions and historical activity to ensure accurate reporting of financial data
- Performs analysis of complex financial transactions and prepares the associated general ledger entries, including annual and periodic updates of investment holdings
- Prepares consolidating entries to accurately reflect total organizational financial position
- Helps prepare financial statements and various analytical reports for use by management
- Reconciles intercompany payables and receivables, researching discrepancies and presenting proposed corrections to supervisors
- Reviews transactions to ensure proper classification as capital or operational expenditures
- Prepares Federal Forms 1096s and 1099s on an annual basis
- Prepares accounts receivable transactions, including preparation of invoices and entering receipt of payments within the accounting system
- Provides support to the payables process, as needed, including: Originating wire and ACH transactions and posting those transactions to the accounting system; Entering vendor invoices into the accounting system; and Issuing checks for payment to vendors
- Performs daily and monthly reconciliations for bank accounts and sub-ledgers
- Researches variances and prepares adjusting entries as needed
- Reviews financial reports for completeness and accuracy
- Complete monthly, quarterly and year-end closing activities
- Complete assigned monthly and annual financial reports within the established deadlines
- Ensure that all entries are processed timely and accurately in the financial system
- Ensure that transactions are properly accounted for and accurately recorded to reflect the company's accounting process
- Record capital assets and set up depreciation and reserve schedules; tracks and reports capital projects
- Prepare and review supporting documentation for all journal entries
- Maintains well organized files for supporting documentation and general ledger files
- Ensures that duties are performed in accordance with established internal controls and guidelines
- Demonstrates continuous effort to exhibit ownership over key responsibilities, improve operations, and streamline work processes to create efficiencies
- Prepare ad hoc reports as needed
- Assists in preparing annual audited financial statements and works with external auditors to complete required audits, including preparing analysis and providing documents requested by auditors
- Prepares miscellaneous compliance filings for state and federal tax and regulatory agencies
- Serves as a job expert/organization resource in assigned area; stays informed of current accounting issues, including GAAP; maintains comprehensive knowledge of accounting policies and procedures for assigned area
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting (or a business curriculum which included completion of introductory and intermediate accounting sequence) from an accredited college or university AND 2-3 years of professional accounting experience OR if non-degreed, 7+ years of professional accounting work experience.
Must have general ledger and fixed asset experience. Must also have strong analytical and reconciliation skills. Must have comprehensive skills in MS Excel and strong familiarity with MS Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer candidate with extensive experience with PeopleSoft accounting software. Prefer candidate to have had a minimum of three years of accounting experience in the oil and gas or energy industry, particularly in the natural gas midstream gathering and processing industry.
